Lane Cove River snakes its way through tranquil bushland at Lane Cove National Park, within easy reach of Sydney’s centre. The park is a favourite retreat for Sydney families. Native animals typical of the area include swamp wallabies, echidnas, greyheaded flying-foxes, as well as birds and reptiles. Roaming freely in the park are many waterbirds – you will often see white-faced herons, Eurasian coots and dusky moorhens – as well as pied currawongs and colourful crimson rosellas and lorikeets.
Picnicking on the riverbanks is extremely popular; there are about 34 grassy recreation areas, most with tables and barbecues, some with shelters (some picnic areas can be reserved). Swimming is prohibited (the water is deep, cold and polluted) but visitors can hire a rowboat, or bring their own kayak or canoe to paddle along the river. It is also possible to fish in the river below the weir and near Fullers Bridge. Bike riders often take the southern side of Riverside Drive. Those preferring an easy stroll could take the Riverside walking track on the northern side, from Lady Game Drive to De Burghs Bridge (about 5 km, 3 hours return), with the chance to spot a variety of birdlife. Fiddens Wharf Walking Track (3.5 km, 3 hours return) is another easy walk (it does include steps). For something more strenuous, a 27-kilometre section of the Great North Walk (from Sydney Harbour to Newcastle) also passes through the park.
