Appendix VI

Filmography

The record of the early Chaplin films has been a matter of accretion over the years since 1944, when Theodore Huff compiled his pioneer Index to the Films of Charles Chaplin. Five years before that, in The Rise of the American Film, Lewis Jacobs believed that it was already an impossible task to compile an accurate listing of the Chaplin Keystone films. Huff nevertheless achieved a complete Chaplin filmography by title, apart from the mysterious The Professor. Huff also made a brave beginning in compiling the credits and casts of the films, and his remains the basis of all subsequent filmographies. His errors – like crediting Roland Totheroh as Chaplin’s cameraman at Essanay – have also tended to be perpetuated.

The early 1970s saw efforts to augment the credits. Dennis Gifford’s 1974 biography, Chaplin, contained the most comprehensive filmography to that date, thanks to conscientious work in identifying players from the screen. This, however, also introduced some new errors: any passing virago was optimistically identified as Phyllis Allen, while the misapprehension that Edna Purviance appeared as an extra in Monsieur Verdoux and Limelight was to be trustingly followed by many subsequent filmographers. Some of the errors (though not the last) persisted in the filmography in the present writer’s Chaplin: The Mirror of Opinion (1983).

Inevitably the present filmography relies to an extent upon the work of Huff and his successors, and in the case of the early films cannot claim to be comprehensive or definitive. Since the original edition of Chaplin: His Life and Art, however, Brent Walker has generously made available the outstanding filmographical research done for his book Mack Sennett’s World of Comedy (still unpublished at the time that this edition was in preparation), which has made possible a much more confident documentation of the Keystones. Brent Walker himself acknowledges the invaluable collaboration of Phil Posner and Steve Rydzewski. Thanks to their work it has been possible to make extensive corrections to this section of the filmography, particularly in respect of the plethora of later alternative release titles. Just as this edition went to press, Slapstick magazine (issue 3, January 2001) published Phil Posner’s ‘Comprehensive Cast Listing’ to the Keystones, which most significantly adds the Keystone credits of Jess Dandy, some of whose roles have hitherto erroneously been attributed to Fritz Schade, and of Gene Marsh. These two names have been restored to history through the devoted researches of Bo Berglund and Glenn Mitchell respectively. Otherwise the source for credits that are included here for the first time is generally the studio records preserved in the Chaplin private archive at Vevey.

The system of numbering established in Uno Asplund’s 1971 filmography Chaplin’s Films, and adopted by Timothy J. Lyons’ Charles Chaplin: A Guide to References and Resources (1979) and in Chaplin: The Mirror of Opinion, is again followed here to avoid the confusion which might result from the co-existence of two systems. As far as may be ascertained, the footages given for films are those of the original release prints. ‘Other titles’ signifies known titles given to a film on subsequent reissue.

Photography:

According to Hans Koenekamp, who was at Keystone from 1913 and photographed Mabel’s Strange Predicament, any Keystone cameraman might work any day on any production. Asked (in 1983) who shot Tillie’s Punctured Romance, he replied ‘who didn’t?’ Previous filmographies have generally credited Frank D. Williams or E. J. Vallejo (Making a Living) with the photography of Chaplin’s films, but other members of the Keystone camera team must also have worked on the Chaplin pictures.
