The four main grips

Pronated grip

One of the most popular grips, used in many exercises. When your hands are at your sides, a pronated grip has your knuckles facing to the front, and palms facing to the rear. When your hands are overhead, the grip has your knuckles facing to the rear, and palms to the front.

Supinated grip

Another of the most popular grips, used in many exercises. When your hands are at your sides, a supinated grip has your knuckles facing to the rear, and palms facing to the front. When your hands are overhead, the supinated grip has your knuckles facing to the front, and your palms facing to the rear.

Parallel grip

A grip that has the palms parallel with each other.

Reverse grip

A grip where a bar is held with one hand pronated and the other supinated. It’s a specialized grip for a small number of exercises, such as the deadlift. It’s also called an alternating grip, or mixed grip.
