Use of Frozen Foods

If you are going to be using frozen fruits or vegetables, then you should be aware of a few specific safety precautions. As soon as frozen foods start to thaw and become warmer than 41 degrees Fahrenheit, any bacteria present before freezing will start to multiply. Frozen foods should always be kept frozen until they are ready to be thawed and used.

The USDA offers three recommended ways to thaw foods safely:

  1. In the refrigerator.
  2. In cold water in a leak-proof bag and changing the water every 30 minutes.
  3. In the microwave.

You should never thaw frozen foods on a counter.
