Chapter 19

Second World War Wargames Rules

UNIT TYPES

This game is designed for 1:72 or 1:76 plastic figures and models, which comprise the unit types of Infantry (deployed with 8 figures on a base of 4–6 inches width), Mortars (a weapon with 2 crew on a base 2–3 inches wide), Anti-Tank Guns (a single piece with 2 crew; a base is unnecessary), and Tanks (a single model).

SEQUENCE OF PLAY

Each complete turn comprises two player turns. Each wargamer follows the sequence listed below in his or her player turn:

  1. Movement
  2. Observation
  3. Shooting
  4. Eliminating Units

1. MOVEMENT

Movement Allowances. Units may move up to the distances listed below during their turn:

Unit Type Movement Distance
Infantry and Mortars 6”
Anti-Tank Guns 8”
Tanks 12”

Turning. Units turn by pivoting on their central point. They may do so as often as they like during their move.

Terrain. Units are affected by terrain as follows:

Moving and Shooting. Units may not shoot if they have moved during the same turn.

Interpenetration. Friendly units may pass through each other freely.

2. OBSERVATION

Units may only shoot at units they can see (with one exception: see rule (2c) below). The following rules outline who can see whom:

Observation Ranges. Units may only be observed up to a range of 12”.

Line of Sight. Target observation is blocked by hills, woods, towns, and other enemy units.

Indirect Fire. Mortars may shoot at targets they cannot see. The victim must however be observed by another friendly unit.

3. SHOOTING

Units have a field of fire of 360º. The procedure for shooting is as follows:

Measure Range. Infantry, Anti-Tank Guns and Tanks have a range of 12”; Mortars have a range of 48.”

Assess Casualties. Units roll a die when shooting, the score of which is modified according to the table below:
