GAME NAME: BOMBERMAN WORLD
ESRB RATING: E for Everyone. Content suitable for those 6 years or older.
THEME: Bomber-guy puzzle and strategy game
PLAYERS: 1 to 4
DEVELOPED AND PUBLISHED BY: Hudson Soft
COMMENTS: If you play only one Bomberman game this year, make it Bomberman World. The others are good, but this is the one to play. Accommodating from one to four players, this game has the classic Bomberman action we’ve all come to love, adapted for the PlayStation.
Strategy:
This is the rumor—and remember, it’s only a rumor—but according to well-placed and well-played sources, the computer cheats when you play against it. That means the system has an unfair advantage when you’re going one on one with it. Tests I’ve conducted seem to lend a bit of credibility to the theory. So, keeping that—and remember it’s only a rumor—in mind, this is a game best played against friends. After all, if you can’t bomb your friends, whom can you bomb?

GAME NAME: 3D LEMMINGS (also sometimes known as LEMMINGS 3D)
ESRB RATING: E for Everyone. Content suitable for those 6 years or older.
THEME: Suicidal rodent puzzle/strategy game
PLAYERS: 1
DEVELOPED BY: Psygnosis
PUBLISHED BY: Psygnosis
COMMENTS: Lemmings 3D started off life as a PC game. But it was so popular that it soon jumped to home video games. It’s a puzzle game that requires a strategy, so I classify it as a puzzle game for those who usually don’t like puzzle games. This either means that it’s a really great puzzle game or a really bad one. Personally, I think it’s one of the best puzzlers out there.
Okay, so you know about lemmings, right? If not, here’s the scoop. Lemmings are furry little creatures that have a reputation for forming large groups and following each other off cliffs to their deaths. This really isn’t true, because I saw something about lemmings on public television once that said it wasn’t.
The object of the game is simple: You have to save the lemmings by stopping them from walking off the cliff. However, you don’t have to save all the lemmings, just the green ones. The way you save them is by turning the other lemmings into a maze or having them dig or build an obstacle.
Warning:
This is not an easy game to play. There are something like 100 levels. Plus, you have to get really good at the camera angles before you can play well. The cameras are very important in this game, because they let you see what’s going on and what’s about to go on by looking ahead on the play field. Luckily, there’s a practice mode.
This game really is a lot of fun, but you have to go back to it a couple of times to really get the hang of it. There aren’t many codes in Lemmings, but these are essential.
Codes:
Go to the Stage Select screen and enter the code LAMPWICK. Then choose a difficulty level and go to the Start screen. You should now be able to enter one of the following passwords to select the level on which you want to begin.

GAME NAME: TETRIS
ESRB RATING: E for Everyone. Content suitable for those 6 years or older.
THEME: Updated version of classic puzzle game
PLAYERS: 1 or 2
DEVELOPED BY: Jaleco
PUBLISHED BY: Jaleco
COMMENTS: Tetris was one of the great puzzle games of all time. Kind of like a thinking man’s Pac-Man. Needless to say, this version has been significantly updated. However, it’s a skillful update that manages to keep the spirit of the original game intact.
Basically, you have to continue to solve a puzzle by clearing blocks from underneath a little professor kind of guy. If you don’t clear the blocks, he climbs to the spiked ceiling and dies.
This version has some nifty features, one of which allows you to create your own puzzles. And there’s a split screen that lets two players compete. In short, this is a game that you can play with your parents or probation officer.
Codes:
Speedy Guy: To increase the speed of the professor, wait until you finish a level and he falls into the pit. Then press Right 2 and he’ll walk faster.
Select a Stage: Go to the puzzle mode and the Select Password screen. Then enter Down, Down, Right, Up, Up, Right, Up, Up, Up, Right. Then repeat code again. The block color should be blue, pink, green, blue, pink, green. When you start the game, the Stage Select should be available to you as an option.
GAME NAME: BUST-A-MOVE 4
ESRB RATING: E for Everyone. Content suitable for those 6 years or older.
THEME: Puzzle game
PLAYERS: 1 or 2
DEVELOPED BY: Taito
PUBLISHED BY: Natsume
COMMENTS: This is everyone’s favorite puzzle game—or should be! Maybe you’ve played the previous Bust-a-Moves and enjoyed them, but now you’re worried that Bust-a-Move 4 doesn’t live up to the others. Worse, what if the game is just a rehash of others in the series? Fear not. This game, in case you don’t know it by now, is just as good as the others. There’s a new pulley system and combo system that weren’t included in previous versions. And, get this, there’s also an edit function that allows you to create your own levels. How cool is that, huh? Plus, the graphics are simply outstanding. Although there is some grumbling that this game is best played in one-player mode rather than two-player mode, I fail to see any difference. Geesh, you just can’t please some people.
Code:
Change Worlds: Go to the Title screen and enter: Triangle, Left, Right, Left, Triangle. A sound and a small face will appear at the bottom right portion of the screen to confirm correct code entry.
GAME NAME: BUBBLE BOBBLE
ESRB RATING: E for Everyone. Content suitable for those 6 years or older.
THEME: Cute character strategy and adventure puzzle game
PLAYERS: 1 to 2
DEVELOPED BY: Acclaim
PUBLISHED BY: Acclaim
COMMENTS: One of the most popular arcade and home games of all time. Bubble Bobble has appeared in versions for Saturn, Game Boy, and PC. It’s one of those games that inspires fanatic loyalty among players who love it and yawns among those who could not care less. A hybrid of a role-playing and puzzle game, the point of the game is to free a young woman from the clutches of a bad guy. You play as one of two heroes, Bub and Bob, in a cooperative manner. In this, the game was one of the first two-player cooperative games. It was also one of the first games to include joystick combos and other video innovations. Basic game play includes hunting and searching out power-ups and doing away with enemies. You eliminate enemies by trapping them inside bubbles from bubble gum, then bursting the bubbles. That’s where the cooperative game play comes in. Out of Bubble Bobble grew such games as Rainbow Island and Bust-a-Move. And, oh yeah, you play as dinosaurs.
Tip:
Hey, if you see a bottle-shape do-hickey, go for it. Once you collect it, the screen will clear and you’ll get to play a minigame where you have 50 seconds to collect bonuses. If you collect them all you get mega points.
Codes:
The debug mode includes map and infinite lives.
Debug Mode: Go to the Title screen and enter: Down, Up, Down, Up, Right, Down, Left, Down, Up, Down. Once in the debug mode you can enter the following codes:
Last Level: Left 1
Next Level: Right 1
GAME NAME: BLASTO
ESRB RATING: E for Everyone. Content suitable for those 6 years or older.
THEME: Adventure RPG
PLAYERS: 1
DEVELOPED BY: Sony Computer Entertainment
PUBLISHED BY: Sony
COMMENTS: If you’ve played Blasto, then you know—you either like this game or you don’t. New twists on standard adventure video games make it, well, different. Blasto is an inflatable-type character with limited moves in a strange world. However, this is a pretty good game to learn on and a good second-string game regardless of whether you’re thrilled with it or not. It has fairly simple controls.
Tip:
Do you feel lucky? The buttons that say, “Do Not Press” can either destroy you or give you something good. Press them at your own risk. Here’s a hint though—you’ll be better off pressing the button in Level 2 than in Level 1.
Codes:
Extra Strength: At the Start screen, enter Up, Right, Right Left, Down.
Makeover: Go to the Start screen and enter Up, Up, Down, X, Triangle, Circle.
View Babes: Finish the game and save all the babes. When you start a new game there will be a “View Babes” option available. Try pressing Triangle here for odd effects.
Tips and Strategy:
Whenever you go into a new level or area, hold down the fire button on your laser to charge it up and get ready for action.
Wizards can be killed only by “special” shots. Don’t waste ammo on them if you don’t have specials available.
GAME NAME: JERSEY DEVIL
ESRB RATING: E for Everyone. Content suitable for those 6 years or older.
THEME: Cartoon-type RPG
PLAYERS: 1
DEVELOPED BY: Behavior Interactive
PUBLISHED BY: Sony
COMMENTS: If you liked Crash B, then you’ll like Jersey Devil. On the other hand, why not just play Crash, right? Jersey Devil is a fine adventure platformer with decent graphics, a decent concept, and some very interesting moves. Maybe it’s even a bit more simplistic than Crash, so if you need to brush up on your skills, this is an excellent choice.
Tips:
Collect the pumpkins and win an extra life. It’s not immediately obvious what the pumpkins are for, but they are there to give you an extra life. However, you need 100 of the squash to get that life. Run after them if necessary. If you want unlimited lives, at the start of the game get the bonus life at the top of the fountain. Then pause the game and go to the Status screen. Then start again and collect another bonus life at the top of the fountain. Then pause the game and go to the Status screen. Restart the game and collect another bonus life at the top of the fountain. Then pause the game and go to the Status screen … well, you get the idea. Use this technique to acquire as many bonus lives as you need. Far from being a down-and-dirty useless cheat, this technique can prove invaluable for younger players or those who are having trouble learning the game.
GAME NAME: SYPHON FILTER
ESRB RATING: T for Teen. Content suitable for those 13 years or older.
THEME: Action/espionage
PLAYERS: 1
DEVELOPED BY: Eidetic
PUBLISHED BY: 989 Studios
COMMENTS: Syphon Filter is your basic save-the-world-from-madmen-with-deadly-virus games. Okay, that’s too simplistic. In fact, while the game has been compared to Metal Gear Solid, I’d say that it definitely surpasses it, and does so with a milder level of violence. This game is about smart playing as much as anything else. Definitely not a game for beginners, this one-player beauty takes all of a player’s ingenuity and stealth to get through its 20 levels.
Okay, that’s all well and good, but what about plot? It’s got plot aplenty. The story begins when a secret lab is destroyed and a deadly and genetically programmable virus, called Syphon Filter, is stolen. The virus can kill millions and only one man can stop the bioterrorists—Gabe Logan (Hey, he’s from Jersey, so you know he’s tough!)—also known as you. The terrorists are headed by a madman named Eric Rhoemer, and they’ve somehow managed to smuggle the virus into Washington, D.C. The virus is a particularly nasty kind that can be programmed to kill specific people.
Right from the start you know this game is going to be action. You have more than 15 different weapons, ranging from a handgun to a grenade launcher.
This isn’t just a dumb shoot ’em-up game. Syphon Filter requires you to complete several different kinds of missions. For instance, there are timed missions (similar to a time attack mode) and spying missions, where you shouldn’t be seen, and everything in between.
Also putting this game out in front is the level of realism the designers have included. For instance, not only does Syphon Filter contain some of the best use of FMV in any game, but even the digitized effects, like shattered glass and fogging breath, are superior to what is currently out there.
But make no mistake. This is a violent game. If you’re the least bit uncomfortable with shooting games, then this isn’t the game for you.
Tips:
Like Metal Gear Solid, you should think of this game as a Super Mario with automatic and biological weapons. That is, try everything and anything. Leave no box unturned and no door unopened. Use the flashlight, use your radar, and search out every nook and cranny of every room. If a door doesn’t open, don’t forget about it. You can be sure there’s something behind it you need. Remember its location and go back when you have a new keycard. Since you can carry only one keycard at a time, this strategy is vital to the success of your mission. Always check the bodies of the dead terrorists for keycards.
Make generous use of Left 1 to look around and scope out an area. Also, use your flashlight as much as you can, even in semidarkness.
GAME NAME: SPYRO THE DRAGON
ESRB RATING: E for Everyone. Content suitable for those 6 years or older.
THEME: RPG/adventure fantasy
PLAYERS: 1
DEVELOPED BY: Insomniac
PUBLISHED BY: 989 Studios
COMMENTS: Spyro the Dragon is a game that needs no introduction. However, for the sake of those who might have been in prison or on the moon for the past few years, here’s the rundown.
Spyro is a 3-D game platformer much like Super Mario 64. This single-player game has you playing as Spyro, a kid dragon who has to free all of the adult dragons who have been trapped by the evil Gnasty Gnorc in crystals. You also have to rescue baby dragon eggs. To do this, you have to explore six different worlds, each of which has six different levels. Each level has a ton of objects to find, including jewels and gems, while fighting off bad guys. Easy, right? Don’t bet on it. This is one tough game to play straight through to the end.
The levels in Spyro’s world are huge and complex. And gems can be extremely well hidden. Plus, you can’t go to the next level until you collect all the gems from the level you are already in. How many gems in each level? A lot! More than 300 on some levels, and as few as 100 on other levels. If you find all the gems, then you get a bonus level.
The complexity of Spyro shouldn’t scare off younger players, though. Very young players probably won’t finish the game, but they still can have a lot of fun running the little dragon around.
Spyro does have one very cool feature that even experienced players should like and for which you should be grateful. That’s the inventory screen included on each level. This magnificent screen tells you how many gems you’ve collected and how many you need to collect. It’s the kind of innovation you wish some other games had built into them.
Okay, Spyro has a few things going for him. For one thing, he’s a dragon. He can breathe fire to fight his enemies. He can also head-butt and power charge. And he can fly—kind of. Since he’s only a pup, he glides more than flies, but this is still a valuable tool.
The key to success in Spyro is thoroughness. This means that you have to kill almost every single enemy you see. If you’ve missed one or two on a level and still can’t find all the gems, chances are those guys have what you’re looking for. Second, be thorough in exploring every world. This is a real treat and a real pain. The worlds are huge, so it takes a long time to explore all of them. On the other hand, they are very cool, so exploring them is never boring.
Strategy:
Head-butting is the best attack on the little guys. However, you need to flame the big ones. The boss on each level needs only three hits to be eliminated. Also remember to always head-butt the bad guys that have the silver shields or armor. Flame doesn’t work on them. Head-butting works best on the treasure chests. However, if a chest doesn’t open immediately, find the nearest ramp and get a running start at it. The extra speed adds power to the head-butt.
If it looks like you’re facing imminent death by falling, pause game play and exit the current level, and then reenter that same level. However, this trick cannot be done in the home levels. If you need additional lives, go back to a previous level. Once you are at an earlier level, seek out the bad guys who gave up the gems the first time. Defeat them again and they’ll give you extra lives. Remember, keep Sparx’s color at the bright yellow level. To do this you need to feed him lots of butterflies.
Spyro will run faster if you hold run and jump at the same time. For the maximum glide distance, start gliding at the highest point of your jump.
To obtain a Double Supercharge at Wizards Peak, you need to line Spyro up with the Supercharge arrows that point down the slope. Then charge down the hill as fast as you can. Spyro’s feet will turn yellow. While still Super Charging steer right and go down the next hill with arrows. Spyro’s feet will turn a kind of reddish orange. At this speed he can reach even the hard-to-reach places on the level.
To obtain the secret level in Gnasty’s World you have to complete the game, finding all of the gems and releasing all of the adult dragons. Easy, right? By then you should be in Gnasty’s World. Walk to the big, ugly green dragon head. It will open for you and reveal the secret level.
Crash Demo:
When Press Start appears at the opening screen, press Left 1 and Triangle. You’ll get a Crash Bandicoot Warped demo to enjoy.
GAME NAME: CRASH BANDICOOT 3: WARPED
ESRB RATING: E for Everyone. Content suitable for those 6 years or older.
THEME: Role-playing game/adventure fantasy
PLAYERS: 1
DEVELOPED BY: Naughty Dog
PUBLISHED BY: Sony
COMMENTS: Poor Crash. Conceived as a cute little action adventure and role-playing character, he never quite made it as a video game hero on the level of Mario. This is kind of unfair, since Crash Bandicoot games have gotten consistently better with each new version. Warped is the best game in the series. The graphics, music, and play are great. The adventure plot line is solid and a lot of fun to play through. There are five worlds and 30 levels in this latest version. Crash’s arch-enemy villain, Dr. Neo Cortex, has returned, but Cortex isn’t the big boss any longer. Now he’s reporting to the even more evil Uka Uka. Crash and Uka Uka are in a race against each other to collect the crystals and jewels needed to rule the world. There’s also a Dr. N. Tropy (Entropy? Get it? If not, find a dictionary or physics text.) who has constructed a warp machine. The warp machine is conveniently located in the Warp Room, from which Crash and his loyal sidekick sister Coco can travel to different worlds and times in search of the crystals. Got it? Good.
Now, one of the truly great features in Crash 3 is that it combines elements of other types of games within the standard platformer adventure mode. For instance, there’s a flying sequence, a Jet-Ski sequence, a tiger-riding sequence, and a motorcycle sequence. And no cheesy half-baked elements are these. Each of the special action racer elements are full-fledged games in themselves. Each is chock full of the kind of thrills, chills, and high-quality graphics you would expect in a dedicated game of that kind.
At the start of the game you only have access to the first five worlds. Collect enough crystals and gems and the other worlds open up to you. However, you can return to a world at any time by beaming into it through the Warp Room.
Crash’s basic moves are running, jumping, crawling, and spinning. However, spinning seems to be the easiest and safest mode of attack for most bad guys. For really serious baddies, spinning and jumping together is terrific.
The game features 25 crystals. Each level has one crystal that you get by finishing the level. Collect five in an area and a boss level becomes accessible. The game includes 42 gems. Each level contains a minimum of one white gem, but there are also colored gems that are accessible after you collect the white ones. Oh, yeah, there are boxes. Lots and lots of boxes. You should smash each and every one of them, except the Nitro and TNT boxes; they’ll blow you to little Bandicoot bits. But, and this is a big but (no, not “Butt!”), when the TNT boxes explode, they will still count as collected boxes. Also, those little white boxes with question marks on them will turn into solid steel if not busted open immediately.
When you reach the end of a level, you’ll see a semiclear box. If there’s a number there, it refers to the number of boxes in the level that you missed. You have to go back to that level and smash the remainder of the boxes. If you got all the boxes, you’ll see a gem.
When you complete a level you get a crystal. However, you have to go back to the level and do a time attack thing to get one of the relics, which are sapphires and gold.
You can return to the Warp Room at any time by pausing the game and selecting the Warp Room option. Also, you should Pause when you leave the game, even for a little while. If you don’t Pause, then Crash starts moving by himself, even without anyone touching the controls. You can save and load games in the Warp Room by walking up to the Save/Load Wall. You should save your progress as often as you want.
Tips:
After you defeat each boss, you will be awarded a new special power. Here’s a rundown of the powers and their uses.
Bazooka: Press Left 2 to access and then the O button to shoot. You get a Wumpa front Bazooka. A good long-distance weapon.
Body Slam: Hit X and O for a terrific body-slam move that is great for smashing.
Crash Dash: Hold down the Right 2 button to get a speed burst. Use for time attack modes and also for adding distance to your jumps.
Double Jump: Double push or tap the X button for a high jump.
Codes:
Eggipus (also known as Eggapus) Level: After you collect the yellow gem in the Dino Might level, get to the second pterodactyl. This bird (it is a bird, right? Okay, well it looks like a bird) will then take Crash to the Eggipus (Eggapus) level. There he’ll be able to ride the dino.
Hot Coco Level: To access this secret level from the Road Crash level, find the sign with the alien head on it. It should be on the left side of the road. Run into it as fast as you can and you’ll warp to another level featuring Jet-Skis.
Spyro Code: To see the Spyro the Dragon demo, enter the following on the D-pad: Up, Up, Down, Down Left, Right Left, Right Square.
The First Crash: If you have the first Crash Bandicoot, there is a special code for opening all the levels. The code, which you should enter on the Password screen, is: Triangle, Triangle, Triangle, Triangle, X, Square, Triangle, Triangle, Triangle, Triangle, Square, X, Triangle, Circle, Triangle, Triangle, Triangle, Circle, Square, Triangle X, X, X, X. Some people claim this ruins the game. Well, that may have been true when the game was the only Crash out there. Today, with two other Crashes around, this code is pretty good for practicing moves or showing newcomers what Crash is all about.
GAME NAME: FROGGER
ESRB RATING: E for Everyone. Content suitable for those 6 years or older.
THEME: Amphibian-themed platformer
PLAYERS: 1 or 2
DEVELOPED BY: Millennium Interactive
PUBLISHED BY: Hasbro Interactive
COMMENTS: Frogger took a lot of heat when it came out in PlayStation form. If you didn’t care for it when it was in the arcade, well, you probably won’t care too much for the beefed-up cartoon version for the PlayStation. Personally, I always kind of liked Frogger. In any event, we should all be kinder to Frogger. It was, after all, one of the first platformers.
For those of you too young to remember the original game, the object is to maneuver your frogger from moving log to moving log across a river. There are other environments, but everyone remembers the logs.
Frogger is one of those games that is great for young players. Also, it’s a great game if you want to just veg out and not think too much. There’s not a great deal that’s challenging here, but it’s a great distraction. Frogger is the kind of game you can play while talking to your friends.
Codes:
Level Select Option: Pause the game while playing and enter: Right, Square, Triangle, Square, Triangle, Right 1, Left 1, Circle.
Unlimited Lives: Pause the game while playing and enter: Right, Square, Triangle, Square, Triangle, X.
Note:
By combining both of these codes—Level Select and Unlimited Lives—the game becomes an excellent game for very young players.

COMMENTS: Parappa is probably the best game you’ll never play. So, do yourself a favor and play Parappa. You’ll like it, really. Don’t even read what I have to say about the game, just go get it. Right now. Immediately. What are you waiting for?
The main character in the game is a rap-singing dog. In order to progress through the various stages—challenges met by teenagers everywhere—you have to rap along with a martial arts sensei, a frog, and a mouse, and so on, and so on. Believe me, it’s better than I describe it. The way you rap along with them is to play a kind of advanced game of Simon says. So, beat the moose and get your driver’s license.
I know it sounds silly. It sounds nuts. It sounds absolutely deranged. And it probably wouldn’t help any if I told you that the characters are as flat as a pancake. But believe me, this is a fascinating game. Even the music is good. Even if you don’t like rap, it’s still good.
Have I convinced you yet? No? See, it’s still the best game you’ll never play. Your loss.
