* It is worth noting that Raymond Floyd, the 1986 US Open champion, one of the world’s greats and long conversant with British and European golf, was asked by Sunday Express correspondent Alan Tyne, in California in January 1987, why the gap between the United States and Britain and Europe had narrowed so perceptibly in recent years. He gave ‘the introduction of the bigger, American ball’ as his first reason. ‘This,’ he added, ‘automatically made them better strikers once they got the hang of it.’
