FRIDAY

CHAPTER 40

(1:50AM): Tom

We were awoken by pounding on the door. A man’s voice asked, “Tom and Kate, are you there?”

Kate groaned. I stumbled to the door and turned on the porchlight. I recognized Otto and Norma. “What’s happened?”

“I was walking Norma back to her room and we saw a strange person coming out the door. We were worried about Kate, so we rushed over here.”

Kate, stark naked, pressed against my back. “I’m okay but I want to check out our room. Give me a second to get dressed.”

“We’ll be out in a second,” I said, closing the door.

“I’m not going to have time to do more than brush my teeth,” Kate said as she walked to the bathroom.

After dressing, Kate strapped on her pistol. I finished dressing and we stepped outside to join Norma and Otto.

“What happened?” Kate asked, as we walked to the room she shared with Norma.

“Otto and I stayed up late talking,” Norma said. “He walked me back to my room and when we were two doors down, we saw someone slip out the front door and disappear around the corner of the building. I knew right away it wasn’t you.”

“What did this person look like?” Kate asked.

“They were about your size but dressed in a black sweatshirt with a hood.”

“Man or woman?” I asked.

“We couldn’t tell,” Otto answered.

When we got to the room, Kate had us stand back. She unlocked the door, flung it open and straddled the opening with her gun in a shooting stance. “No one is here.”

We followed Kate into the room. She turned on the overhead light. “Does anything look different?” She asked Norma.

“No.”

Kate threw open the bathroom door and flipped on the light. “Clear.” She turned to Norma. “Does this look the same?”

Norma stuck her head in and looked around. “Yes.”

Kate and Norma moved to the center of the bedroom. “Look around,” Kate said. “Is there anything out of place?”

The four of us scanned the room. “There’s something strange on the top row of the bookshelf,” Norma said.

I climbed onto a chair to check out the rectangular object crammed between two books. “It’s another camera,” I said.

“What’s a camera doing there?” Otto asked.

“Let’s talk about this outside,” Kate said.

We trooped out of the cabin and stood in the middle of a parking space. “Someone is stashing spy cameras around the campus,” Kate said. “I assume that it has something to do with the deaths of Eastwick and Moore.”

“So, they want to spy on you?” Norma asked.

“Yes. Probably because I’m running the investigation until the Monterey Sheriff’s Department can get back here.”

“Do you think I’m safe in our room?” Norma asked.

“I’d prefer it if you stayed somewhere else,” Kate said. “You could stay with us or perhaps with Otto.”

“I’ll stay with Otto,” Norma said, taking his hand.

“Good idea,” Otto said with a grin.

“Wait here while I get my things,” Norma said.

We all waited while Norma collected what she needed. Then we walked south to the end of the parking lot. We said good night and Norma and Otto headed for his room and Kate and I walked back to our suite.

“Do you think we’re in danger?” I asked Kate.

“Only in the sense that we’re being stalked.” She frowned. “I don’t think we know enough to threaten the assailant; they’re watching us to make sure we don’t learn anything that would jeopardize them.”

Kate and I returned to our suite, stripped, and got into bed. “I notice that even though there’s a serial killer loose and we’re being stalked, it hasn’t diminished my sex drive,” I said.

“I’ve noticed that too.” Kate said. She was lying naked next to me, slowly caressing the left side of my body with her right hand.

I cupped her soft butt with my left hand and moved her into my erection.

“When you touch me, I lose control.” She slid me inside of her and began a rhythmic movement.
