This book describes a journey made in 1949. Since then the face of Spain has changed almost out of recognition. The end of the long drought, an American loan, the influx of millions of tourists and the carrying through of a huge programme of industrial development and housing have raised the country to a level of prosperity it has never known before. I have thought it right to leave the original preface so that readers who have visited Spain in recent years may form a better idea of how greatly the situation has changed.
