The Author Mentions the Date of Composition of the Work and Apologizes for Its Brevity

وقع الخوض في هذا الحوض * والاقتناء من قنا تلك الروض * في أواخر شعبان المكرَّم بلا مَيْن * لسنة ثمان وخمسين وألف من هجرة سيّد الكونَيْن * عليه أفضل الصلاة والسلام ما دلّ أثر على عين * فأسقيتُ ذاك الأثر من عين العين * فصار بسُقياه كالإنسان مع العين * في الأوائل والأواخر * فخفق نجم عقده الفاخر * كالبدر في الآفاق * ووافق دوام إشراقه دلائل الأوفاق *

I plunged into this planting plot and canalized the channels of these planted lots²⁰⁶ in the last days of Ennobled Shaʿbān,²⁰⁷ without falsification, of the year 1058 of the Master of All Worlds’ migration,²⁰⁸ upon him the best of blessings and peace so long as trace still points to what once was but is now erased, and I watered that same trace from the spring of certain knowledge till it became, with that irrigation, as the pupil to the eye, from start to termination, its magnificent starry necklace scintillating like the full moon on the horizon, the constancy of its effulgence being in harmony with the indicators of its perfection.

وهذا آخر ما أوردناه في هذه الأوراق والعذر في إيجازه آتٍ^١ [سريع]

كَتَبْتُهُ عَنْ مَدَدٍ قاصِرٍ	فَٱنظر إِلَيْهِ نَظْرَ السَّاتِر
وإِنْ تَجِدْ عَيْبًا فَسَامِحْ فَمَا	زِلْتُ مُقِيلًا عَثْرَةَ الْعَاثِر
وَمِنْكَ خَطّي رَاحَ فِي خَجْلَةٍ	يَقُولُ قَوْلَ الْبَائِسِ الْحَائِر
جِئْتُ سَقِيمًا وَضَعِيفَ الْقُوَى	مَوْلَايَ يَا مَوْلَايَ كُنْ جَابِري٢

وقد اختلسناه من وقفة الأمواج المتدافقة في بحر الموانع مع عدم مادّة مُمِدّه * ولا عُدّة مُعَدّة مُعِدّه * لهذه المطالع على أنّ طول المدى بيني وبين المدارسه * وحلول المُدَد في خلال الممارسه * ونسيان رياضة المهر في ميدان الرياضي * ومراكضة الصافنات الزهر بتلك الأراضي * كالكرة في فضاء القضا * طورًا بالمدن وتارةً بريف نار الغضا *

This is the last of what we have consigned to these pages and my excuses for its brevity follow:

I wrote it with no help to hand,

so look upon it with indulgent eye,

And, should you find a blemish, forgive—

may you ever overlook the stumbler’s blunders!

From you my handwriting turns in shame,

speaking as does one both wretched and confused.

I came as a sick man, my powers weak.

My lord, O my lord, be the one to help me to my feet!

We snatched a moment for it during a lull in the surging of the waves of the sea of impedimentation, despite the absence of any materials of ministration or kit made ready and for these endeavors fit, not to mention the length of time elapsed between me and my education and the interruptions to its application, my forgetfulness of how I was trained as a colt in the ring and once raced the dazzlingly white, so-prettily-standing steeds all over those lands—like a ball in Fate’s vastness,²⁰⁹ now in the cities, now in the countryside of blazing saxaul²¹⁰ brands.

ولكنّ الأمر إلى^١ الله والحمد لله أوّلًاا وآخرًا باطنًا وظاهرًا

على تنوُّع الآئه في كلّ طور والصلاة والسلام

على رسوله الأعلى زاهرًا وزاخرًا

ودورًا دائمًا في كلّ دور
