With the exception of chapter 7, all the texts are based on original pamphlets in the British Library, London. Spelling, punctuation, capitalisation and dating have been modernised throughout, and a number of minor corrections and changes have silently been made.
The extracts from the Putney debates in chapter 7 are taken from the edition edited by A. S. P. Woodhouse in Puritanism and Liberty (3rd edn, London, J. M. Dent, 1986), with reference to the extract edited by David Wootton in Divine Right and Democracy (Harmondsworth, Penguin, 1986). A number of minor alterations and additions have silently been made in order to make the text more accessible.
