In this case Leftism trumped two fundamental moral principles of psychiatry: to make evaluations only of patients and to keep those evaluations private. In other words, these thousands of psychiatrists were more committed to Leftism than to psychiatry, just as the black Left is more committed to Leftism than to black progress (see the example of the Congressional Black Caucus refusing to meet with the leading black dissident in Cuba); Left-wing Jews and Christians derive their values from Leftism more so than from Judaism and Christianity; and so on.
