Chapter 64

The offices of Global Human Rights Journal were closed for several days the next week, but it wasn’t long before both Jude and Daisy were ready to get back to work, researching and writing about issues affecting the whole world despite their physical injuries.

Jude assumed the role of editor-in-chief and Daisy became senior editor, stepping into Jude’s former position. There was no doubt that Mark John would never be returning to work at the journal.

Jude took Daisy out to lunch on their first day back in the office together. Future stories were on the agenda, but the two women couldn’t talk about work after everything that had happened.

“How did you know to call me when you saw that family tree?” Daisy asked.

Jude shook her head. “I don’t know. Something just told me I shouldn’t keep it to myself. You were the only person I could think of to call.”

It’s time for Jude to make a few new friends, Daisy thought.

“I want to introduce you to a good friend of mine,” Daisy said. “Her name is Helena and you’ll love her. She’s smart and full of fun.”

Jude smiled. “I’d like that. I could do with some other friends.”

Daisy sat back in her chair and regarded Jude fondly. “You know, this is not where I envisioned us ending up when I first met you,” she said.

“You and me both,” Jude laughed. She held up her glass of sparkling water. “Cheers, Daisy. Here’s to a beautiful friendship.”
