Chapter 6 – Probiotics

It is hard to find people who have yet to hear about the “miracle” that is probiotics. Several health problems including diarrhea and constipation can be solved by this “miracle”. Aside from this, probiotics can also prevent or fight colds.

Commercially prepared beverages, foods and supplements commonly banner the term in their labels. The word “probiotic” stemmed from the Greek words “pro” which means “promoting: and “biotic” which means “life.”

The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization defines probiotic as living organisms carried by a host, usually in its gut, bearing a wide range of health benefits for the host. The human digestive system has both “good” and “bad” bacteria. The key to optimal help is creating a correct balance between the two. Medication, diet and disease can disrupt this balance.
