Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, DL, FRS, RA (1874 – 1965) was British Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, and led the country from its darkest hour through to victory in the Second World War. His many awards include the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953, and in 2002, in a BBC poll attracting more than a million voters, Winston Churchill was voted the greatest Briton of all time. Considering all the letters after Churchill’s name, there can be little doubt that Sherlock Holmes would have said of him (as he did regarding the 6th Duke of Holdernesse in ‘The Priory School’): “-half the alphabet! …Well, well, this man is certainly one of the greatest subjects of the Crown!” (Drawing by the author. )
