ONE DEAD AFTER GAS LEAK EXPLOSION IN GLEN COVES

June 2, 1991

A thirty-two-year-old man is dead after an explosion Saturday night in the suburban enclave of Glen Coves.

The fire department was called to the scene at 4:11 a.m. after an unidentified woman made a 911 call saying she smelled gas near the property. By the time GlenCo Fire arrived at 4:21, the house had already exploded. All occupants got out safely, aside from the owner of the house, George Forrester, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr. Forrester and his family had lived in the two-story house in the Glen Coves subdivision for approximately three years before the incident. Described as “a quiet family who kept to themselves,” the Forresters had recently renovated the 1972-built property. The close-knit suburban enclave was rocked by the sudden tragedy, with many wondering how safe their own homes were. However, fire personnel were able to prevent damage to any neighboring properties.

The cause of the gas leak is still under investigation. Though, initial evidence seems to point to a faulty gas stove recently installed during a kitchen remodel.

GlenCo Gas Company has offered free gas line inspections for anyone interested. Investigators say if you ever smell gas, leave the house immediately and call 911 from a safe distance away.
