This is what the Lord says:
I remember the unfailing loyalty of your youth,
the love you had for me as a bride.
I remember how you followed me into the desert,
into a land that couldn’t be farmed.
Israel was set apart for the Lord.
Jeremiah 2:2–3
Are you still eager to please God, or are you more interested in him pleasing you? Are you driven by a desire to serve him, or are you whining because things aren’t going your way? Your soul will never be happy when it has forgotten what God wants from it, and that is your presence and adoration. How much of that do you give? How much do you work to do what pleases him and to give him a good rep with your friends and family?
In Jeremiah 2, God is asking his people why they have walked away, forgotten they loved him, and gone after other gods. He can remember a time when they adored and trusted him, but somehow they have gotten away from that passion, hope, and love. Do you notice a difference in your life? Has your passion for God grown or diminished? Can you remember a time when you didn’t care about anything but him? If you have gone backward instead of forward in your love relationship, then you will more than likely feel bad right now, and that’s good—it means you are distressed, and godly distress causes you to change or repent (see 2 Cor. 7:10).
Today is your second chance to get back to your first love. Plan time today, tomorrow, and all week to devote to remembering what he has done for you, to adoring him, and to just being in his presence.
