Come to me, all who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28
What does it mean to find the kind of rest talked about in Matthew 11:28? Have you found it, or are you lost in the stress of a particular problem? God promises to take that problem from you, but you have to be willing to hand it over. He’s never going to take it by force. The longer you hold on to it and refuse to let go, the longer you make God wait. Part of believing in God is believing God’s Word is true. And nothing is truer than the truth that God can and will handle your burden for you. But turning it over to him means more than just giving it up; it means giving it up and taking up his yoke. You make an exchange—your burden for his. He promises that his is light.
So what is his burden, his yoke? It’s simple. It’s his commands. Give up your problems and start concerning yourself with doing just what he asks. It’s easy, really. He promises it is, and that’s because he helps you. He walks beside you and gives you the strength, his strength, to do it. The burden you are carrying right now is not his will for you. He wants you to be free to leave the heavy lifting to him. So let go and look to his Word for your marching orders. Know that when you do, life will get a whole lot easier and your burden a whole lot lighter.
