When Jesus came near, he spoke to them. He said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. So wherever you go, make disciples of all nations: Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
Matthew 28:18–19
The backstory behind making disciples is not the needs of unsaved people but the authority of Jesus. He said, “I have authority, so wherever you go, make disciples.” That “so” means his authority is the reason. He didn’t say, “They have needs, so wherever you go . . .” Jesus wants you to tell people about him wherever you go because of his authority, not their needs. This command isn’t reserved for the missionary who decides to go somewhere to help a people group. Jesus is talking to everyone about the places they go every day—“wherever” they go.
Jesus’ authority comes from God the Father and is important because his authority can rescue people from everything bad in their lives. His authority is the power people need to be set free, and knowing that, why would anyone keep quiet about it? If you could heal people of their disease, why would you keep the cure a secret? You wouldn’t. You would share it with everyone. And it’s the same with the gospel. The message of what Jesus did on the cross is just what the world needs to be saved.
Your only role in others’ salvation is just the talking. After that, the rest of it is up to God. So don’t be afraid to do your part: talk the gospel. Know it and then tell it. You don’t have to argue or debate; just share it and then let God work on their hearts. Just remember that if no one had told you, you’d still be lost and wandering, unsure about your destiny, life, and your role in it. Let the world know the good news of what Jesus has done for you.
