Jesus said to them, “Come, follow me!”

Mark 1:17

Are you a follower or a leader? When it comes to your life, who is in the lead? You or Jesus? In the Bible the disciples (Christians) were called “followers.” A follower is someone who believes the Word of God, is saved by his sacrifice and filled with his Spirit, and imitates Jesus. But just look at the word for a minute: follower. A follower isn’t out in the lead saying, “Come on! Let’s go!” A follower isn’t picking the path and then trying to convince the leader he should go where she wants. A follower goes behind. A follower does whatever the leader says and goes wherever the leader leads.

When you pray, are you in front of God directing him to where you want to go next, or are you behind him asking where he wants you to go next? It’s really easy to try to direct God when you pray. It’s easy to forget who’s God and who’s the follower. But do the words “stumbling around in the dark” mean anything to you? Does that ever sound like your life? Well, maybe that’s because you’ve run ahead of the light. If you would fall back and follow the light, like walking through the dark with a flashlight in your hand, then you would be able to see better and stumble less.

Follow Jesus. Don’t look back at him and say, “Are you keeping up?” Fall back and follow. Rest. Be calm. Wait. And move out as he moves out. When you follow God instead of trying to lead him, your steps will be more confident and firm.
