Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Listen, Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord. So love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second most important commandment is this: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”

Mark 12:29–31

Humility is a part of every act of faith. Only in humility can you love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and only in humility can you love your neighbor as yourself. You can’t love if your spirit is easily caught up in pride. How hard is it for you as a fallen human being to humble yourself and love others regardless of how you feel or what they’ve done or failed to do to you or for you? Nearly impossible, but that was what Jesus asked of all who heard his message. No commandment stands higher than these two: love God and love others. Love is the very nature of God and the supreme call for all his children.

Following God’s Word—believing it and more importantly acting upon it—is a humbling experience. It’s a weird twist of fate to find out that, in the words of Christ, “Whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant. Whoever wants to be most important among you will be a slave for everyone” (Mark 10:43–44), but you can trust this is true. You can be sure that God will oppose the arrogant but favor the humble (see 1 Peter 5:5).

That’s why it’s important to take the first step of humility seriously, and that is the humbling act of accepting the death and resurrection of Christ, understanding that your sin put him on that cross and that because of the way he suffered, you are now set free. It is a good practice in the life of the God Girl to preach the gospel to yourself every day. Read the accounts found in the Bible to always keep the truth fresh in your mind so that you can live in true humility, astounded by the amazing love of such a powerful God and touched by his relentless pursuit of you as part of humanity.
