He will come to convict the world of sin, to show the world what has God’s approval, and to convince the world that God judges it.
John 16:8
When the Holy Spirit reveals sin in your life, it’s natural to feel unworthy of the kindness of God. But you can’t let feelings of unworthiness become more important to you than the gifts of God. It can be easy to condemn yourself, easy to be overwhelmed with feelings of guilt and then to make that the final word on your soul. But God has the final word on your holiness, not you. When he offers forgiveness, he offers it regardless of how unworthy you feel. Your feelings are no judge of truth. God’s truth is the only thing that matters. To hold on to your unworthiness, then, is to sin. It’s trying to make your rules trump God’s.
One of the Holy Spirit’s jobs is to convict you of your sin, which shows you how unworthy you are, so don’t be shocked by the experience. Accept the truth of it and the truth that God sent Jesus as a ransom for your sin. Don’t hold on to your unworthiness as if it’s more important than the salvation Jesus gave you, because when you do, you worship your unworthiness more than you worship God.
