Certainly, sin shouldn’t have power over you because you’re not controlled by laws, but by God’s favor.

Romans 6:14

Don’t hate the sinner; hate the sin.” You’ve heard it before, but how does that apply to you? Your sin is no excuse to hate yourself. You fail. You fall. You sin. And your sin is horrible. But there is a cure, and it’s called the kindness or grace of God. It is powerful and effective. No sooner do you say “thank you for your forgiveness” than your sins are totally cleaned up.

Your sin is just your love affair with something other than God. So the cure is deciding to agree with God, and that means hating your sin, or just calling a sin a sin instead of pretending like you aren’t sure if it’s bad or not. If you have to ask, deep down you know the answer. But you have to remember: don’t hate yourself; hate the sin. What’s so ugly is not you but the sin in you. It’s the sin that’s gotta be destroyed, not you. You can gain total self-control when you accept the fact that your sins are forgiven as soon as you hate them as much as God does and you promise to walk away from them instead of protecting them. You must choose to hate sin, because when you love your sin you reject God.

If you are tired of sin and tired of being unproductive for God, then start with the question “What do I love more, my sin or my God?” Only the right answer will set you free and bring you back into a position of soul integrity, where you aren’t divided between your loyalty to God and sin, but instead you are consistent in your faith in the one who saves you from your sin.
