But if God’s Spirit lives in you, you are under the control of your spiritual nature, not your corrupt nature. Whoever doesn’t have the Spirit of Christ doesn’t belong to him.
Romans 8:9
S in is no longer your master once you have the Spirit of Christ living in you. That’s because you belong to him; he’s your new master. And that means that you aren’t under the control of that sinful nature anymore but are under the control of your spiritual nature. So then why do you keep on sinning? Why do you keep doing the very things you hate?
We all have days when we fall into sin as if we’ve fallen into some kind of pit, but when the Spirit lives in you, you don’t stay in the pit and make yourself at home there. You jump out immediately and decide to avoid that hole in the future.
When you find yourself in a pit but you just don’t want to get out, that’s when you’re in trouble. That’s called living in sin, and it’s evidence that you aren’t living for God. Sin happens, but don’t let it be by your choice. Choose to get far away from it once you notice it in your life or in your vicinity. We all sin; we all mess up and do things we don’t want to do or didn’t mean to do, and that’s why Jesus went to the cross for us. But knowing that you’re sinful and expecting to sin are two totally different things. Have an expectation that, with the help of the Holy Spirit and spending time in God’s Word, you will not sin. But when you do sin, lean on and trust in the Spirit of God that lives in you to master you. In your Spirit be a slave to God—do all you can to please your master, not expecting to sin, but also do not hold on to regret or be surprised when you do sin.
