Through the blood of his Son, we are set free from our sins. God forgives our failures because of his overflowing kindness.
Ephesians 1:7
Beware of taking advantage of God’s forgiveness. If you’re about to do something wrong and you think, “Well, at least I know that God will forgive me,” you’ve sorely misunderstood the Word of God. Remember, the only reason you are forgiven is because of the horrific death that God’s Son died on the cross. To take advantage of that as a free pass to sin is to choose his death for him. I know that’s not your intent, but that’s the outcome. Never forget that the forgiveness that is so easy for you to take from God cost his Son sheer agony. Never forget the price at which you were bought.
God is good and kind. He loves you. He is there for you, but never, ever think that it is because of this love alone that he is able to forgive you. Your sin required something more: it required that payment, or ransom, be given in return for your transgressions. It’s only because of Christ’s blood and suffering that he can say, “Your sins are forgiven.” This unfathomable gift of God—the persecution, torture, and death of his Son—is what gives you instant access to forgiveness. Never take God’s forgiveness for granted, because it comes to you by the blood of his child. Christ hung on the cross so you could have forgiveness. Remember that the next time you are about to take advantage of this amazing gift.
