Do everything without complaining or arguing.
Philippians 2:14
Don’t complain—it’s a sin. Familiar with it? When it comes to the weather, your clothes, friends, family, grades, work—how many times a day would you say that you sin by complaining? And while we’re on the subject and you’re getting all real with yourself, how does all this complaining make you feel? Better? Does it make people around you feel better about life? Just something to think about.
But wait, there’s more. This little verse in Philippians also says no arguing, making that a sin too. Ugh! Really? So when it comes to your friends, family, politicians, enemies, bosses—how many times a week would you say that you sin by arguing? And how does arguing work for you? Does it usually pan out how you planned it, or does it make things worse? Does it make people happy with you or more angry?
Complaining and arguing both promise to make things better, or at least to make you feel better, but the truth is that both not only make things worse but also lead you away from God, because sin separates you from God. The good news is, Jesus promises to set you free from your sin when you confess it and turn away from it. So here’s your chance. If things aren’t great in your life and you want more of him in your life, then say no to complaining and arguing. All the time. Every day. Always. Confess those times when you’ve messed up and done them anyway, and then commit yourself to not doing it again—and I mean really commit yourself, not just say it.
When you start to make God’s Word more important than talking, you become more holy and ultimately more happy. Just give it a try and see if it isn’t so.
