CHARACTER-BUILDING TABLE

Fill out the following table for each of the three films referred to at end of Chapter 6, “Craft Compelling Characters,” entering information as you watch. List the protagonist and antagonist across the top, and, in the boxes below that character, how the qualities listed in the left-hand column were conveyed, including the character's innate humanity. In film, this is called “saving the cat,” a crucial opportunity for the viewer or reader to connect with the narrative that is usually demonstrated through a small kindness early in the story.

Some ways that the qualities in the left-hand column are conveyed in film and in novels include gestures, dialogue, clothes, and physical interactions.
