   Hyperthyroidism in cats

Lemon balm may be useful in cats with hyperthyroidism to decrease thyroid output and possibly decrease blood pressure.

THERAPEUTIC USES

Lemon balm is believed to block iodide uptake and inhibit antibody attachment at the thyroid cells. This makes it potentially useful for cats with hyperthyroidism. Secondarily, it may prove helpful for pets with high blood pressure (as lemon balm can lower blood pressure), depression, or indigestion.

SAFETY ISSUES

Do not use in pregnant or lactating pets. Lemon balm should not be used in pets with hypothyroidism due to its ability to decrease thyroid hormone levels. Lemon balm may be useful in cats with hyperthyroidism to decrease thyroid output and possibly decrease blood pressure.
