Common Uses
Constipation
Chickweed is a safe herb useful for its soothing properties. The entire plant, fresh juice, or salves and ointments containing chickweed can be used.
Chickweed is useful for its soothing and lubricating properties. While recommended to assist in the treatment of constipation, it may also be useful to control hairballs. Irritations of the oral cavity or esophagus may also be relieved by the administration of chickweed. Topically, chickweed poultices may cool and soothe minor burns and skin irritations, and can be helpful for pets with localized dry, itchy spots.
Chickweed is generally considered safe, but the rare pet may be allergic; large quantities may have a laxative effect. To check for allergies, a small amount should be applied to the skin first to check for inflammation, hives, or other signs of sensitivity. If no reaction occurs, feed a small amount and watch for vomiting, diarrhea, or hives.
If no reaction occurs, use as directed by your veterinarian.
