Sometimes things just have a way of playing themselves out. This story is a journey, a journey through a time that saw our country transformed from the pariah of the world to a shining example of tolerance and forgiveness; a journey that so stunned us who were part of it, that we are only now accepting its significance and allowing ourselves our pride. Within this journey is the story of my acceptance as a young man of the winds of fate in the face of the unthinkable; and the discovery of an army Battalion that seems to have epitomised the transformation of Southern Africa – from an age of conflict and despair to one of hope and integrity.
As much as this is a reflection of my personal experience, at a time of enormous change, it is more the telling of a Battalion which, while it may be no longer, is a unit that is so unique that its spirit will forever be out there in the savannahs and forests of Africa …
However, it is still my story.
