1 This was far from the case: some of them – including Peter Schreier – would later go on to have the most brilliant musical careers. Schreier joined the choir full-time months after the bombing; he was ten years old. Even among many other young talents, his voice stood out and in the late 1940s his solos were recorded. After his voice broke, Schreier embarked upon a dazzling operatic career, taking him around Europe; but Dresden has always been his home.
