I have always loved movies. As a child I would’ve rather watched a movie than do almost anything else. There was one movie, however, I wasn’t so sure about. I was twelve years old, and my mum was taking my sister Frances and me to see The Ten Commandments.
“I love the Bible, Mum, but I think this might be a bit of a yawn,” I ventured.
She assured me that she’d heard great things about the special effects, and that all three of us would love it. I wasn’t convinced.
We went to Green’s Playhouse, the oldest movie theater in our town—which, to me, seemed appropriate. The theater had long velvet drapes that would swing open to reveal the screen. Well, they did most nights. That evening it took two men and a ladder to get those drapes open. When the movie finally began, I was, to my surprise, hooked.
I’ll never forget how I felt when Charlton Heston—I mean Moses—held up his staff and the waters of the Red Sea parted . . . with much more ease than the drapes had. It only took seventeen seconds for the waters. (I know because I’ve gone back and timed it.) But that great scene in a movie is not an accurate picture of what Moses and the children of Israel experienced. Instead, as Moses himself reported, “The wind blew all that night, turning the seabed into dry land” (Exodus 14:21). All night long!
Have you ever prayed and wondered why it seemed like God wasn’t doing anything? What we can’t see with human eyes is that God is working all night long.
Have you cried for a child who has wandered off and shows no sign of ever turning back? God is working all night long.
Have you prayed for a job so you can support your family and, although you’ve poured out your heart, God seems deaf to your cries? God is working all night long.
Only God knows how long the night will be, but you can be absolutely certain that He is at work in the darkness. When you lay your head on your pillow tonight, cast your cares on Him and rest in the solid truth that He is working for your good!
