How Much Do You Think You’re Worth?

When Christian was a senior in high school, Barry and I decided to put our house on the market. I’d felt for some time that it was more house than we needed, and now, with the prospect of our son leaving for college, we agreed to find something a bit smaller.

We met with a realtor to go over the details. My first question was “How do you decide on the right price for a home?” She said that several factors helped determine the cost, but the bottom line was this: “Your home is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.” I love that!

So let’s use this solid bit of real estate wisdom to establish once and for all that our lives are worth whatever Someone is willing to pay for it.

Think about that for a moment. Jesus Christ, the sinless Lamb of God, willingly left the glory of heaven to come to earth where He would be misunderstood, betrayed, and brutally executed—and He did that because He has determined that our lives are worth that cost! We forget way too easily the incredible value Christ places on us.

Perhaps it’s easy for you to believe this truth about Jesus’ love for other people, but you struggle to believe it for yourself. If that’s the case, then place your name in the beloved text of John 3:16—“For God so loved that He gave His only begotten Son, that [if he/she] believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (NKJV).

If you look only to a husband, children, a career, or friends, you can never get an accurate read of your true value. The reality is that Almighty God alone determines that, and He decided before you were even born that you are worth the life of His only Son. You are a treasured daughter of the King of kings.

Jesus paid with His life the price He believes you are worth.

“God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

John 3:16 NKJV

You formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

Psalm 139:13–16 ESV

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8 ESV

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV

To all who did receive [Jesus], to those who believed in his name, [God] gave the right to become children of God.

John 1:12 NIV
