Casting On for Toe-Up Socks

Casting on for a pair of toe-up socks is very different from casting on for cuff-down socks because the toe of the sock must be closed at the beginning of the knitting rather than at the end. Here is one method for starting socks from the toe up.

Crochet Circular Cast On

This method makes a neat toe with no bulk.

1. Begin cast on
Leaving a 4" (10cm) tail to be woven in later, wrap the yarn twice loosely around your thumb. Remove the loop from your thumb. Work 8 single crochets into the loop, leaving the stitches on the crochet hook.

2. Distribute stitches
Distribute the stitches onto 4 double-pointed needles, 2 stitches on each needle.

3. Close circle
Pull on the tail to snug up the stitches into a tight ring.
