SEASON 8, EPISODE 17, “DAYS OF SUNSHINE, DAYS OF SHADOW”
“You think we’ll ever see the day we aren’t fretting about money?”
—CHARLES INGALLS
The Ingalls family is a lot like my family. We aren’t poor, but every time the bankbook is looking good, something comes up to empty it. New tires for the car and braces for crooked teeth never happen when it’s convenient. Charles’s job at the mill is slowing down, and his growing children need bigger clothes. He thinks about taking a railroad job, but Caroline doesn’t want him to be away from the family that long.
Worrying about money is normal in our society. It may feel as though we can never get ahead without an unexpected expense draining our wallets. My husband often tells me that we are right where God wants us—not rich, but definitely not poor.
Depending on the Lord for every bill to be paid strengthens our trust and deepens our love for the One who provides. Caroline’s response is right. She reminds Charles that most folks are just like them, working hard and sometimes coming up short. But our God always comes through. Let’s not forget to praise Him every day for His provision.
May my satisfaction be found in you. Don’t let me be so rich that I don’t need you or so poor that I have to resort to dishonesty just to make ends meet. Then my life will never detract from bringing glory to your name.
