Growing Up in God

I love babies! Do you? I love the way they smell, the wrinkles around their little ankles, and the way that they can curl their whole bodies up into a ball. I love when they start to smile at our faces! Soon after that they start learning to walk, and that is when the real fun begins!

Isn’t it cool to think about how everyone starts off as a tiny baby and does not know anything? But as babies grow up they learn a whole lot in a very short time. As they get older, they are no longer happy to just stay wrapped up on someone’s lap. Instead, they want to reach, smell, and touch everything they see. Something else happens too—the more they learn, the more people expect them to do what they have been taught. They have to use what they know in order to live.

When you were a baby, you did not understand that a stove is hot or that stairs can be dangerous. But when you got older, those things made more sense, right? Now, it would be a little weird for you to just walk up to a hot stove and touch it because you know that it will burn you. Now that you understand how a stove works, people expect you be careful around it.

This is also true when you grow in God. The more He teaches you, the more He wants you to use what you know. Just like babies, toddlers, and teenagers have parents or adults to help them, God gave His Word and the Holy Spirit to help you. John 14:26 says that the Holy Spirit “will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

Reading your Bible and studying God’s Word is a great way to learn and grow. But remember that you are not alone. The Holy Spirit will help you make good choices! God does not want you to stay a baby forever!

Dear God, thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to give me wise counsel and to remind me who I am in Jesus. Please teach me to listen to Your voice and help me to grow up in You! In Jesus’s name, amen.
