How often do you brush your teeth?
Hopefully you said at least twice a day, every day! Some people brush their teeth after every meal. They even bring their toothbrush to school! They know that the more they brush, the healthier their teeth will be.
Why do you brush your teeth? What do you think would happen if you only brushed them once a week or once a month? If you let food and germs stay on your teeth, they would be ruined and could not be used to help you chew, talk, or smile. Being able to do these things is pretty important! So in the morning and in the evening you head to the bathroom, stand over the sink, and put a little toothpaste on your brush. You work hard to take care of your teeth and to protect them.
Now let me ask you a question. How important is your relationship with God? How often do you talk to Him? Do you talk to Him at least twice a day? Hopefully you talk to Him even more than that!
Prayer is like brushing your teeth. The more you do it, the better the results. If you only pray once a week, like at church on Sundays, your relationship with God may not be so fresh! Talking to God often is a way for you to protect yourself and brush away the lies and hurtful things that are all around you every day. These things destroy your relationship with God and stop you from doing the important things He wants you to do.
Unlike brushing your teeth, you don’t have to pray in a certain place or a certain way. You can talk to God anywhere at any time that you need to! First Thessalonians 5:17 says it best: “Pray continually.”
Dear God, I’m so glad I can talk to You as often as I want! Help me to remember how important it is to pray so that I can stay fresh and shiny and have a better friendship with You for my whole life! In Jesus’s name, amen.
