I love to dance! Dancing is one of my favorite things to do. But there’s just one problem…I’m not very good at it. I think I hear different music in my head from what is actually being played. When everyone is going in a certain direction, I am the one going the opposite way. Arms flying, legs wiggling, and not really dancing at all! I look much more like an excited puppy than an elegant ballerina.
When I was a little girl, I used to wish I could dance like some of my friends. They were really good at it and, well, I was not. I always wanted to be on the dance team at school, but I never even tried out. I never took dance classes because I just knew there was no way anyone could help me learn to dance better.
I was so embarrassed by my dance moves that eventually I just stopped dancing. Well, I stopped dancing in front of other people. When music would come on, I would just stand still and try really hard to hold in my fancy moves! But it was hard to not dance because dancing brings me joy. One day, I just could not hold it in anymore! I started dancing and I did not even care how silly I looked. I started dancing all over the place! And do you know what? My friends didn’t care either. No one laughed at me or even asked me to stop! They were just happy that I was having fun with them.
Now I wonder what would have happened if I had tried out for the team or taken a class. I know I would have had a lot of fun, even if I did not learn to dance perfectly.
Is there something that you love doing but think you are not that good at? Well, don’t stop doing it! Never let what others think, or even what you think they will think, stop you from trying and doing things you love. You may not look or sound like the people around you, but remember, that is just because God made you unique. Have fun, try new things, and do what makes your heart happy!
First Corinthians 10:31 reminds us, “Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” As long as you can say you were doing it for God’s glory, you can do it with joy and a smile! When you dance or sing or paint or whatever, ask yourself, Would God smile if He saw me? If you can answer yes, keep on doing it!
Dear God, I know there are people who are better than me at ____________________________, but I love doing it. Help me to keep on doing it! Help me to make You look awesome and give You glory as I try. In Jesus’s name, amen.
