Chapter Twenty
Jack
Heaven
“JACK, YOU HAVE company.” Ernie moved rapidly aside as a small angel that resembled a bird more than a human perched on the side of Jack’s desk. It was one of the messengers who flitted about Heaven, taking urgent messages from one department to another.
“The supervisor wants to see you, Jack,” it said.
“Did she say why?”
“Just said she wanted to see you.” The messenger flew on to the next desk to continue its deliveries.
Jack stood and sighed. He knew he had overstepped his bounds by arranging for the computers at the lab to go slightly haywire, but what choice had he had? From the moment he had found the misplaced prayer for the dog, everything had gone from bad to worse. Now it was reaching worst.
Beside him, Ernie gulped. “Good luck.”
“Thanks. Just sit here and keep an eye on what is going on down there. You will need to make a full report to my successor.”
“Successor?” Ernie gulped again, more loudly this time. “You did what you had to. How can you lose your place here at the Pray Care Center for that?”
Jack did not bother to answer. Ernie would understand when he was more experienced. Heaven had a reputation for never making mistakes, and everyone pitched in at the Pray Care Center to keep customer satisfaction at one hundred percent.
Until Jack missed that child’s prayer and then had compensated by not reading the next request as closely as he should have.
But everything should be better now. He had arranged for the computers to overload. It had not been difficult. Lightning, which was electricity, was one of the best displays Heaven put on, so it had been simple to arrange for a single silent bolt to strike the lab building. The computers were not permanently damaged. He had been careful about that, but there would not be any test results until he could find a way to correct the error he had made.
He hoped that his supervisor would understand. If she did not... Heavens, he did not want to think about that!
