Appendix 2:
Resources and Events for Children and Young People
As with Appendix 1, the recommendations in this section will become outdated as new resources become available. For a recent version, please go to www.quakerquest.org and follow the link to Books, where the information will be reviewed and amended regularly as long as the website remains active.
First, two excellent paper resources which can be obtained by telephoning 0808 109 1651 or emailing outreach@quaker.org.uk. Quaker Meeting and Me is a pocket sized story book for small children with enchanting colour illustrations and a great puzzle element at the end. It is thoroughly recommended. And a full colour leaflet, Quakers: a guide for young people, is a beautifully produced concertina of information and inspiration for people aged twelve and over. Both are useful and will save a lot of breath when school friends or teachers want to know what all this Quaker stuff is about.
www.quaker.org.uk/yqspace is the key website for all information about activities for young people. It provides a calendar and notes on all the various young people’s groups, organisations and activities. Here are some to look out for.

- Friends Summer School is a week in August geared towards people aged between 11 and 17. Most of the participants are from north-west England and north Wales.
- Yorkshire Friends Holiday School is another August event based near York, for 13 to 17 year-olds.
- Friends Southern Summer School, also in August, is for young people between 11 and 14, based in the south of England.
- Friends Southern Senior Conference, in August again, is for those aged between 15 and 18 and is based in the south of England.
- Northern Young Friends Summer Shindig is for 11 to 16 year-olds from Scotland and northern England, though also from the rest of Britain if there are spaces.
- The Leaveners is the Quaker community arts organisation. Each year it runs residential events and workshops, giving young people the opportunity to enjoy drama, music and the creative arts through active participation (www.leaveners.org).
- Young Friends General Meeting (www.yfgm.quaker.org.uk) is for 18 to 30 year-olds. It organises a number of events enabling young Quakers to get together for social and spiritual gatherings.
