CHAPTER 45

Sara noted, "Skiing with Charlie," on her wall calendar for next Saturday and logged out of her e-mail. Ty and Inya were the leading story on Yahoo. The sub-headline was an update on how the awards show was going. Ty had won two awards already. The second sub-headline was about Tinya's visit to Tiffany's earlier in the day and what that meant. Sara had read the article earlier and found it filled with nothing but speculation. Were they engaged? Weren't they? If they weren't, was Ty going to propose tonight while accepting an award?

Sara had breezed through the article and, once done, wondered why she had wasted her time even clicking on it. Yahoo was definitely one of her worst habits. As she hopped onto the couch and began looking around for the remote she was mentally inventorying what they would need for spring skiing next Saturday. The weather forecast was good, but it was still kind of early to be sure. Of course if the forecast turned to rain, they would find something else to do. But assuming they did go the boys would need wind breakers. Sara thought about the bins in the basement filled with stuff Robbie had long out grown. There must be something for Ben in there. Robbie would need something new though. She still had the gift cards for the sporting store, but that would probably be expensive. Maybe she should check Target first.

Sara clicked the TV on just in time to see a shot of Inya and hear the announcer promising when they came back they'd have the world premiere of Ty's new song. She turned to the guide, but she was still paging through it when the commercial break ended, and the awards show started up again. Sara was curious. She had heard all the songs Ty had written when they were together before he had recorded them. She wanted to hear the new one. She exited the guide and focused on the TV. They flashed another shot of Inya in the audience, as the band started to play. Then the camera switched to Ty holding the microphone. Sara smiled as she watched him close his eyes. She still knew him well enough to know how hard he was concentrating. Then she stopped thinking and just listened.

There's a place in my mind

A swing in a tree

Sunset from the porch

With you next to me

I can see all the seasons

Spring summer and fall

And then I see winter

Clearest of all

Short winter days

Long dark winter nights

You by the woodstove

Glowing firelight

It won't always be easy

But it will always be right

All I want is my angel

In my bed tonight

I see you on beaches

At parks, at the mall

It really won't matter

Where we end up at all

I can't really say

How I ended up here

But one thing I know

And it's perfectly clear

I'm nothing without you

No fortune or fame

Can make me feel like I feel

When you cry out my name

So is there a chance?

Do you think you just might?

Will you be the angel

In my bed tonight?

And maybe real soon

If the timing seems right

You'll say you're my angel

For the rest of my life

"Wow," Sara breathed out.

She realized she had been holding her breath. The song and Ty's voice had left a dull ache inside her. Like something was missing. And that something was something she wanted very badly.

The TV flicked back and forth between shots of the audience going nuts, Ty shaking hands and slapping hi-fives with the guys in his band and of course, Inya, who was yelling and cheering loudly. Sara vaguely noted the announcement that the final award of the night, album of the year would be next. Then the commercials started.

Sara knew the all the speculation was about to come true. Ty was going to propose to Inya if he won the award. There was no doubt in Sara's mind. The song was practically a proposal in and of itself. She'd watch it and then go to bed. Why she had to have the luck to get to watch her ex-boyfriend propose on TV to someone else was something she'd never be able to wrap her brain around, but it didn't matter. She'd watch it and go to bed. The only question was did she need chocolate to get through it. She considered it during the commercial break and figured no. Besides, it would be time to start wearing shorts again soon. Definitely not.
