{270} INDEX A

HONORIFIC TITLES

Many of the sovereigns, commanders, and scholars in this anthology were known by honorific titles indicating they were supporters of the religion (Din) or the realm (Dawla), for example, Salah al-Din (Righteousness of the Religion), Asad al-Din (Lion of the Religion), Iftikhar al-Dawla (Pride of the Realm), Sayf al-Dawla (Sword of the Realm), and so on.

It should be noted as well that it was common to give sons theophoric names, that is, names that begin with “Servant of” (ʿAbd) and conclude with one of the names of God, for example ʿAbd Allah (Servant of God), ʿAbd al-Malik (Servant of the King), ʿAbd al-Rahman (Servant of the Merciful), ʿAbd al-Wahid (Servant of the One), and so on.

It should be emphasized that any honorific title in the anthology or a name that begins with ʿAbd, Abu, or Ibn must be treated as an indivisible unit. Nur al-Din does not mean that Nur is the first name and al-Din is the last name, ʿAbd al-Malik does not mean that ʿAbd is the first name and al-Malik is the last name, and so on.

Certain terms (e.g., Muslim, Christian, Frank, Syria, Egypt, etc.) occur frequently throughout the anthology. For the most part, we have only indexed these terms in connection with relevant persons and events.
