SUMMARY

When you want to make or break a habit, do the following:

• Choose one area and begin.

• Don’t feel overwhelmed by all the changes that are needed. One thing at a time, one day at a time is the best plan.

• Be clear about what you want to accomplish.

• Pray and secure God’s help.

• Focus on doing the right thing, instead of not doing the wrong thing. (We overcome evil with good.)

• Don’t expect instant results. Be prepared to be committed for twenty-one to thirty days, and longer if necessary.

• Develop a support system to help you remember the new habit you are developing:

1. Put up signs where you will see them often.

2. Depend on the Holy Spirit to remind you when you get off track.

3. Ask a friend or family member to remind you if you’re reverting to old ways.

• Line up your thoughts and words with what you want to see happen.

• Celebrate every day of success.

• When you make mistakes, shake off the disappointment and keep going forward.

• Don’t be discouraged by how far you have to go.

• Never give up!

Watch your thoughts, for they become words.

Watch your words, for they become actions.

Watch your actions, for they become habits.

Watch your habits, for they become character.

Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.
