Juliet had been driving for only five minutes when her mobile rang.
‘Hello? Ricky?’ she said.
‘It’s not Ricky, Juliet, it’s me: Jake. I know it’s early, but I wondered if you’ve had any thoughts about today. I’m free the whole day. I know you’re busy with your investigation: just saying I’ll fit in. Even a quick coffee would be nice.’
‘Oh… Jake…’
‘What’s the matter? You don’t sound very pleased to hear me!’ He said it laughingly, but even through her anxiety Juliet could hear the hurt in his tone.
‘It’s not that… I’m sorry, Jake, it’s not a good time. I think Tim may have done something stupid and put himself in danger.’
‘You mean DI Yates?’
‘Yes, of course I do,’ said Juliet testily.
‘Juliet, tell me what you’re planning on doing. You’re not going to put yourself in danger, are you?’
Juliet hesitated.
‘Just promise me you won’t try any heroics, especially on your own. You won’t help DI Yates by getting trapped in the same situation.’
‘I’ve asked for backup,’ said Juliet defensively.
‘Good. Wait until it comes. And Juliet?’
‘Yes?’
‘I won’t say I love you, because I know it’d make you run a mile. But just understand I wouldn’t get over it if…’
‘Thank you, Jake,’ said Juliet. ‘Please don’t say any more. I have to go now.’
She cut the call, livid that her eyes had filled with tears.
