Part V Greatly Improving the Odds of Success

Barbara, Larry, and Todd, of BLT Design, are back in the chalk cave with Byron, Wilma, and John. They're more comfortable in the cave now, having spent many meetings there with these people, and they're beginning to regret the Superchalk requirements phase is drawing to a close.

Barbara: We need to discuss how much work we have to do before we're done.

Byron: More work? Haven't we thought of just about everything?

Wilma: Not really. We haven't considered what will happen if someone steps on the chalk.

John: Or if someone tries to eat a piece.

Larry: Oh, come on, John, nobody would ever do that!

John: You've never taught high school.

Todd: He's right, Larry. We have to test for everything.

Larry: Test? We're still in the requirements phase.

Todd: Well, we have to test the requirements.

Byron: What for? I can see where we'll have to test the product, or even the design for the product, but why test the requirements?

Barbara: To see if we're really finished.

Todd: And I don't think we're finished.

Barbara: Why not?

Todd: Because I've just gone over the new draft requirements document again, and I've got a list of several hundred problems.

Byron: Let me see that!

(Byron grabs the list out of Todd's hand, glances at it, then shoves it back at Todd.)

Byron: I don't want your list of problems. I want the new draft requirements. Besides, your list looks like just a bunch of typographical errors—lots of commas and periods.

(Byron grabs the requirements document and starts to pore over it.)

Todd: Commas and periods are very important.

Byron: Well, it's more important that I see what you've drafted.

(While Byron is talking, Larry reaches over and gently removes the document from his hand.)

Larry: Trust us, Byron, my boy! Just trust us!
