Chapter Four

H arry opened his eyes and looked around the room. It’s was

peacefully quiet as he leant over and kissed Hazel on the cheek. She

felt warm and was sound asleep.

‘I’m so sorry my love’.

‘Are we ok to come in?’

Harry looked over to see Graham and Heather poking their heads through the door.

‘How is she doing?’ asked Heather as she took a chair next to the bed.

‘The doctor said she’s had a heart attack’.

‘What? I thought it was just some minor cuts?’ said Heather, looking shocked.

‘The doctor seems to think she had an underlying heart condition’. ‘God Harry, I’m sorry. She will make a full recovery though, won’t she?’ asked Graham giving him a hug.

Harry removed his hands from Graham’s sticky back and gave them a sniff.

‘We had a small accident in the cafe; some woman knocked in to me and covered me in coke’.

‘Oh. Well, the doctor seems to think she could have another heart attack, but she is stable for the moment’ said Harry, wiping his hands with hand sanitiser.

‘Bastards. Have the police been in?’

‘Not yet’ said Harry stroking Hazel’s hair.

‘I’m going to call them again. They haven’t been back in touch regarding what happened to us, and this is far more serious. I don’t know why I pay my taxes to the useless pigs’ said Graham as he walked through the door and in to a couple of police officers.

‘I think you may want to rephrase that sir’ said the burly officer in front of him.

‘Ah, yes, what I meant was, I’m sure you guys are doing a sterling service’ stuttered Graham, thinking he would be arrested.

‘PC Sharp isn’t it? You saw us at the hospital?’ said Heather pulling out a chair.

‘I’ll stand thank you, and yes, you did’.

‘Have you found the terrors that threw a brick through my window? Sure it’s the same shits that did this to poor Hazel’ said Graham.

‘We have spoken to some individuals, but there isn’t enough evidence to charge them unfortunately’.

Graham looked like he was about to explode.

‘Not enough evidence? Does me being knocked unconscious by a brick through the window not count?’

‘Don’t get yourself worked up love’ said Heather, ushering him to sit down.

‘What about my wife, officer? Have you found the kids who threw the brick through our window?’ asked Harry.

‘We are working on it sir, but there does seem to be a lack of witnesses to the incident. Please be assured, we are doing everything we can. We would like to speak to your wife when she wakes, but we will leave you in peace now’ said PC Sharp as he walked out into the corridor.

‘No witnesses? This just gets better and better. What on earth are they actually doing?’

‘Calm down love, we don’t want you making yourself ill’.

Graham sat down on the chair and held Hazel’s hand.

‘I’ll find them myself and get justice for us; I’d do a better job than those plastic pigs’.

They are doing what they can. I just need to focus on getting my Hazel better’.

‘And she will, we will help in any way we can. Do you want to come and stay with us tonight?’ asked Heather.

‘Yes, good idea love, you can’t go back to your place with the window like that, come and stay with us and we’ll bring you back tomorrow’.

‘That’s very kind of you both, but I think I’ll stay here with Hazel. You’re more than welcome to come back first thing in the morning though’ said Harry.

‘If you’re sure? Do you want us to bring anything back for you?’ ‘Maybe a newspaper, but that’s it’.

‘Ok love, try and get some rest’ said Heather as they kissed Hazel on the cheek and left.

Harry looked at her and tears ran down his cheek.

‘I’ll be here when you wake up love, you just rest’.

‘Don’t push me you idiot, there’s glass everywhere’.

Carl Smith pulled back the wooden board and squeezed himself through the window.

‘Keep it open, I’m not as slim as you’.

Carl held the board open as his friend Kyle pulled himself through. Both boys are eighteen and dressed in dark tracksuits, with the hoods pulled over their heads.

‘Check those old fucks aren’t around’ said Carl as he snuck in to the kitchen.

Kyle looked in the bedroom and bathroom and came back with his hood off.

‘Looks like its all clear’.

‘Good. Have a look in the bedroom for any jewellery; we can sell that shit easily enough’.

Carl shone his torch around the kitchen and helped himself to some bread left on the side.

‘Look what I’ve found’ said Kyle walking in to the kitchen.

Carl looked over and saw Oscar sat by Kyle’s feet.

‘Keep that thing away from me, I hate dogs’.

‘He’s alright, think he wants some of your bread’ laughed Kyle.

Carl threw a lump of bread towards Oscar who jumped up and

grabbed it in his mouth.

‘Get rid of it’.

‘No way man, it’s cute. Might keep hold of him. He’d be a good fight mate for my dog’ said Kyle rubbing Oscar’s back.

‘Do whatever; just keep him away from me. Let’s just grab what we can find and get out of here before we’re spotted’.

‘If we do, then I got this’ said Kyle as he picked up a kitchen knife. ‘Put your hood up then, don’t want anyone knowing who we are if you have to use that’.

Kyle pulled his hood up tightly over his head and put a lead on Oscar

while Carl went in to bedroom and filled his pockets with as much

jewellery as he could fit.

‘Let’s go’.

Carl pushed his way through the wooden board, followed by Kyle and Oscar. The first flickers of sunlight were emerging on the horizon as they ran down the drive. Before they got to the end, Oscar yanked to the right and dragged Kyle across the lawn. ‘Stop you stupid bastard’.

‘Let him go, before we get seen’ said Carl giving chase.

Kyle tried to let go of the lead but it was wrapped tightly around his wrist.

‘I can’t, it’s tied on my hand’.

Oscar decided to give up chasing next doors cat and stopped running, but not before dragging Kyle through the small garden border, cutting his eye. Carl caught up with them and grabbed hold of Oscar. ‘Have you seen your eye?’

Kyle rubbed his eye and saw blood on his hands.

‘Dammit. Fucking dog, come here’.

He pulled his knife out but Oscar ran off before he could get near him.

‘We need to go before everyone starts waking up, come on’.
