Chapter Fourteen

G raham opened his eyes and was greeted by bright white light. His whole body ached as he rubbed his head. Looking around he saw Harry sat next to him.

‘It aches doesn't it? It shouldn’t last too much longer though’. Graham managed to focus and saw they were both sat in a room with concrete walls painted white, with a small window and a door on one side.

‘Where are we? Last thing I remember was being in the hospital waiting for the doctor to come back in’.

‘I think we have been drugged. Remember we both had a glass of water? I think you were right when you said something strange is going on’.

Graham got up and tried to open the door but it was locked.

‘Let me out of here you bastards. I knew something was going on, now open the door’.

‘Come and sit down Graham, they will be in shortly’ said Harry calmly.

Graham took a seat and looked at Harry.

‘How long have you been awake? Why are you so calm?’

‘About half an hour. A man dressed in a suit came in and saw that you were still passed out so said he would be back shortly’. ‘A man in a suit? Shit, what is going on?’

‘I’m not sure but I’m guessing it has something to do with the government or some agency. Whatever it is that’s going to happen will happen. I’ve had a long life so I’m prepared for what’s coming’. ‘I’m not even sixty yet! Don’t talk like that; I won’t let these bastards do anything to us’.

There was a loud click as the door opened and in walked two suited men, one with dark glasses on.

‘I see you are awake now’ said the one with glasses.

‘What have you done to us and where are we?’ snapped Graham.

‘All in good time’.

‘Hold on, you’re the doctor from the hospital...what the fuck is going here and tell me what happened to my wife’ shouted Graham as he lunged towards him.

The second man pulled out a syringe and stuck in Graham’s arm, knocking him back in his chair.

‘Please don’t hurt him, we just want to know what is going on’ pleaded Harry.

The first man took off his dark glasses and sat down at the table with them.

‘You are still in the hospital, well, we call it a hospital but it’s more like a...no, we’ll call it a hospital’.

Graham tried to speak but the sedative he was injected with was taking hold.

‘I must admit, I thought it would be a lot harder to get you both back here but you’ve saved me a lot more hassle’.

‘What do you mean?’ asked Harry.

The doctor nodded to the second man who walked to the wall and pressed a button. A whirring noise came from the bottom of the wall as it started to rise up from the floor, revealing a large glass screen. ‘Take a look’.

Harry got up from his chair and pressed his nose on the glass.

‘I can’t see anything, it’s completely dark’.

The second man flicked a switch and a swathe of white light illuminated what looked like a hanger. In the corner was a large object covered in a sheet.

‘What is that in the corner?’ asked Harry.

‘Is this like some Area 51 bollocks?’ asked Graham, getting his voice back.

‘Remove the sheet’ said the first man in to the wall.

The sheet was slowly peeled back.

‘Oh my god’ said Harry and Graham in unison.

‘Can you hear me mate?’

‘Yeah, what’s up? shouted back Kyle from a couple of cells down. ‘You didn’t say anything in the interview room did you?’ ‘No, did you?’

‘Of course not you idiot. Just say nothing, they can’t prove anything anyway’.

There was a loud clunk as the metal door to the cells was opened. PC Sharp walked towards Carl’s cell with a man in a suit following behind him.

‘There’s no point bringing a lawyer, I’m still not saying anything’. ‘This isn’t a lawyer, he’s from the government. You are in their hands now’ said PC Sharp as he unlocked his cell. ‘So I’m longer arrested?’

‘Not with us’ replied PC Sharp as he walked down and unlocked Kyle’s cell.

‘If you follow me gentlemen, there is something I want to discuss with you’ said the suited man.

‘Who the fuck is that?’ whispered Kyle.

‘I have no idea, but at least it will get us out of this dump’ said Carl. ‘Hey, do you reckon he’s the guy that has employed us?’ Carl looked at the immaculate suit and dark sunglasses.

‘I think you may be right’.

They were escorted out of the police station and in to the back of a blacked out car. There were two burly suited men in the back seats. ‘Don’t worry about them; they are just there in case you decide to get a bit silly’.

One of the burly men got out so Carl and Kyle were sat in-between them, whilst the suited man got in the passenger seat. ‘Who are you?’ asked Carl.

‘Do you not recognise my voice?’

‘It is you then’.

The man took off his glasses and signalled to the driver to drive off. ‘Correct. It seems you have got yourselves in a spot of bother with the local constabulary’.

‘Only because we were doing what you told us to do’ protested Kyle. ‘And have you done what I asked?’

‘We were in the process of it until we got arrested. Look, can we have what we are owed? I have plans’ said Carl. ‘Again I ask you, have you done what I asked?’

‘We got the two women to the hospital and we were about to get the two guys there until we got nicked’.

‘Did I not specify that I wanted them there alive? Do you realise that one of them died?’

‘That wasn’t our fault, that was down to a friend of ours’ protested Kyle.

‘Did he kill her?’

‘Well no, but he insisted we bring knifes along’.

The man put his sunglasses back on.

‘That is an error of judgement on your behalf. Mistakes need to be paid for, and the business we are in cannot afford mistakes’. ‘What business is that?’ asked Carl.

‘Something you will both find out soon enough. I wouldn’t make too many plans at the moment, you may be with us a little while, so be nice to your new friends in the back’.

‘Is that what I think it is?’

‘And what do you think it is?’

Harry narrowed his eyes and pressed his nose against the glass.

‘It looks like some sort of alien spaceship, don’t you think Graham?’ The effects of the sedative were starting to wear off.

‘That or some secret government experiment. Which is it? I guess you’re not a doctor either?’

‘You would be correct in that assumption. Let’s just say I work for a government agency’.

‘Shit. I knew something dodgy was going on and I knew it would involve you lot. So we have alien invaders now?’ asked Graham. ‘Of sorts’.

‘What does that mean?’ asked Harry.

‘It means that yes, there is alien life here, but they are not invading’. ‘Fuck me; can you not just give us a straight answer? We came to the hospital to find out what happened to our wives, and you drug us and show a hanger with an alien ship in it. And you’re not even a real doctor!’

The man sat down at the table and poured himself a glass of water. ‘Oh don’t worry; this jug hasn’t got drugs in it. You can call me Frank’.

‘Frank? No surname, just Frank?’ asked Graham.

‘That’s all you need to know’.

Graham really fancied a glass of water but decided to wait to see if it affected Frank.

‘Excuse my confusion, but I am very old. Are you telling us that aliens have come to Earth? Are they hostile? Are we in danger?’ Frank sat back in his chair and grinned.

‘Do you want to go down and have a look at the ship?’ Harry looked at Graham and shook his head.

‘Why not? We’re here now so we may as well go down and see an alien’ replied Graham.

‘Good. Follow me’ said Frank opening the door.

They walked along a whitewashed corridor and then down some metal stairs in to the hanger. The large silver ship sat imposingly in the corner of the hanger, its front end pointing down towards them like the edge of a knife.

‘Can I touch it?’ asked Graham.

Harry stood a few feet behind them.

‘I’ll think I’ll just stay here and watch if you don’t mind’.

Graham walked towards the ship and stretched out his hand. The ship felt cold to the touch, giving him a slight electric shock. ‘Whoa, what was that?’

‘It seems there is some kind of electric current running through the ship, but we haven’t figured out exactly what yet’.

‘That bloody hurt my hand’ said Graham rubbing his hands together.

‘Do you want to see the aliens?’ asked Frank.

Harry took a few more steps backwards.

‘Too right I do, as long as I don’t get another shock’.

‘I can’t promise that’ said Frank as he signalled to one of the workers dressed in a white lab jacket.

There was a hiss as a hatch opened on the side of the ship, bellowing out some smoke. Two figures started to emerge out towards them. ‘Hello love’.

Graham saw his wife stood in front of him.

‘What the fu...’

‘Hello dear’.

Hazel also appeared and walked towards Harry, who closed his eyes and passed out.
