BURGER KING: ENORMOUS OMELET SANDWICH

SAVE: 303 CALORIES, 34 G FAT, 10 G SAT. FAT

After hearing the controversy that surrounded this sandwich when it was first released, I was surprised to see how enormous it really wasn’t. Put it on a scale, and it’s really only a couple of ounces larger than the Burger King Original Chicken Sandwiches we ordered.

So why all the hype? Perhaps it has something to do with reports that the sausage patty was deep-fried. Add that to the 2 large omelet-style egg patties, 2 strips of bacon, and 2 slices of cheese, and it sounded like it would be enormous.

So what’s the good news, now that the dust has settled? It’s easy to eliminate more than two-thirds of the fat and more than one-third of the calories and still enjoy the same flavors found in Burger King’s creative and delicious sandwich.

Olive oil spray

23 cup egg substitute

2 slices center-cut bacon

1 Burger King Breakfast Sausage Patty

1 oval sesame seed sandwich roll (about 7" long)

2 slices (½ ounce each) 2% milk yellow American cheese

PREHEAT the oven to 350°F.

Lightly mist 2 nonstick mini loaf pans (6" x 3" x 2") with oil spray. Pour half of the egg substitute into each pan. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until set.

Place a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Lay the bacon slices and the sausage patty in the pan. Cook the sausage for 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until lightly browned and no longer pink inside. Cook the bacon, flipping occasionally, for 4 to 6 minutes, or until cooked but not crisp. Transfer the sausage and bacon to a paper towel–lined plate to drain. Cover with a lid to keep warm.

Meanwhile, set a small nonstick skillet over medium heat. Place the bun top and bottom, cut-sides down, in the pan. Cook for 1 to 3 minutes, or until toasted.

Place the bun bottom, toasted-side up, on a plate. Carefully, using a knife to loosen, remove one omelet from the pan and place on the bun bottom. Cut the sausage patty in half. Place the halves over the omelet, running the length of the bun. They will overlap slightly. Top with the bacon and the remaining omelet. Top with the cheese running the length of the bun. Cover with the bun top.

BEFORE YOU START In order to produce omelets that are similar to those of Burger King, you’ll need 2 nonstick mini loaf pans (6" x 3" x 2"). If you don’t have them, use a large nonstick loaf pan (about 10" x 5" x 3") and cut the omelet in half after baking.

DRIVE-THRU Mornings are hectic? Mix a few batches of the sausage beforehand. Layer the uncooked patties between sheets of waxed paper in an airtight plastic container. Store in your freezer for up to 2 months, so you can pull one out whenever you want. No need to thaw. Add 1 to 2 minutes per side when cooking. Cook the egg substitute, folding it into an omelet, in a nonstick pan on the stove top instead of baking it in a pan. You’ll be able to assemble the whole sandwich in minutes.
