About Mary Helen Immordino-Yang

Mary Helen Immordino-Yang is an Associate Professor of Education, Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Southern California (USC). A former public junior high school teacher, she earned her BA at Cornell University and her doctorate at Harvard University. She has received numerous national awards, including from The American Educational Research Association (AERA), The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), The Association for Psychological Science (APS), The Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences (FABBS) Foundation, and the U.S. Army. She shared the 2009 Cozzarelli Prize with Antonio and Hanna Damasio. In 2008 she was the inaugural recipient of the International Mind, Brain and Education Society (IMBES) award for Transforming Education through Neuroscience, and in 2015 was elected IMBES president by the society’s membership. She has an NSF CAREER award, and her work has also been supported by the AAUW, the NIH, DARPA, the Templeton Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, the Foundation for Psychocultural Research, the USC Provost, and other sources. Since 2012 she has consistently been named among the most influential scholars in education by Education Week’s RHSU Edu-Scholar Public Presence Rankings. Currently she conducts research at the USC Brain and Creativity Institute and teaches at the USC Rossier School of Education. She lives with her husband and two children in Manhattan Beach, California.
