WATERCOLOR PENCIL DEMONSTRATION

Painting an Animal’s Eye

Materials

Surface

Arches hot-pressed watercolor paper

Watercolor Pencils

Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Cobalt Blue, Ivory Black

1. Draw Basic Shapes

To achieve a realistic look for this white-tailed deer’s eye, first draw the basic shape and scribble in black, brown and Burnt Sienna pencils, being careful to avoid the curved highlight.

2. Add Pupil

Blend the colors you laid down in step 1. Wait till they dry, and then draw in the black pupil.

3. Add Final Details

Wet the pupil and blend a bit more. Wash in a bit more warm brown and touch the wet wash with the tip of your brown pencil to suggest the rays in the iris. Soften the highlight and add a bit of cool blue to reflect sky color. For the final touch, suggest a bit of the light ring of hairs around the eye.
